The invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid molecule and its corresponding polypeptide which has immunomodulatory activity in mammals and, in particular, provides protection against lymphocyte, and in particular NK cell, attack and, further, antibodies raised there against and antagonists active there against which also have immunomodulatory activity in relation to lymphocyte cell attack. The molecules of the invention are particularly suitable for to treating viral disorders, inflammation, graft rejection, arthritis or autoimmune disease.
