PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noises when pressing/separable roller pairs provided on the downstream side of the reading position are pressed against each other, and to smoothly carry originals without losing document processing time. SOLUTION: An automatic document feeder comprises a pressing solenoid SOL to press/separate roller pairs 33, and a control unit 40 to control a driver unit 41 so as to supply the first current to the pressing solenoid SOL before a rear end of the document passes through the reading position and supply the second current to the pressing solenoid SOL after the rear end of the document passes through the reading position. Shocks when the roller pairs are pressed is mitigated, and the can be consistently carried to obtain excellent images. In addition, the attraction noises of the pressing solenoid and the pressing noises of the roller pairs can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
