PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact optical scanner which is tolerant of ambient temperature variation and wavelength variation of a semiconductor laser and suitable for high-definition printing, and an image forming apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: The optical scanner has a light source means 1, an optical means 2 which guides luminous flux from the light source means to an optical deflecting means 5, and an imaging optical system 6 which guides luminous flux from the deflecting means to a surface 7 to be scanned and optically scans the surface to be scanned through the rotating operation of the deflecting means; and the optical means has a diffraction part on one or more surfaces and satisfys respective conditional expressions.
