An installation for loading and unloading a number of bottom unloading holders 1 mounted on an endless chain conveyer 2 comprises a holder loading station 6 and a station 7 at which articles are unloaded into compartments 9 of a box 8 carried on an intermittently driven transverse conveyer 10. The holders 1 are each formed of two relatively pivotable parts 18, 19 and 23, 24 which are held in an unloaded position IF, a loaded closed position le or a loaded open position 1b in which the article is unloaded. The upper end 19 of the downstream pivoted part of each holder 1 has a shaft which rides in a slot in the upper end 24 of the upstream pivoted part, and mounts a nylon or steel roller 21. At the start of the loading/unloading run of the conveyer the rollers 21 engage a guide 65 which pivots the holder parts into the unloaded position 1F. If a holder is loaded at 6, the weight of the article in the holder pivots the parts into the loaded closed position where the roller 21 engages a guide 26. At the unloading station 7 the holders not carrying an article have their rollers 21 pass straight through a track 29, the pivoted parts being maintained in the IF position by a counterweight on the downstream part 18, 19, a tacky grease in the pivot bearings, or by spring or magnetic means. The rollers 21 of the loaded holders however move along a guide 32 comprising pivotable regulation elements 34, one for each row A, B, C, D, E of box compartments 9. As a roller 21 engages a downstream fixed regulation element 34A it is deflected down into a track 31 where the holder parts move into the open position to deposit the article in compartments 9A. In passing down into track 31, the roller 21 deflects downwardly a control element 38 which is coupled to or integral with the next upstream regulation element 34 which is therefore caused to rise to deflect the following roller into the unloading positions for compartment 9B of box 8. Each regulation and control element pair is returned to its inoperative position as the rollers 21 move along the track 31. An extension on the most upstream of the regulation elements, i.e. associated with box compartment 9E, causes energization of the motor circuit for the transverse conveyer 10 when said elements are returned to their respective inoperative positions.
