<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide refractories which have excellent thermal spalling resistance, corrosion resistance and coating adhesiveness and are used for a kiln, such as a cement rotary kiln in which chromium is not included. <P>SOLUTION: The refractory brick is magnesia refractories which consist of magnesia as a main raw material and contain 0.1 to 10wt% Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>. The thermal spalling resistance, corrosion resistance and coating adhesiveness can be improved by containing the Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>. Namely, the sintering of the magnesia is accelerated and the corrosion resistance is improved by diffusion of the Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>into the surrounding magnesia. The adhesion of the coating can be enhanced by the proper reaction that the Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>diffused into the brick makes with cement minerals.
