The apparatus (20) emits radio frequency waves (22) in the direction of an objet (24). If the objet (24) contains radioactive material emetting alpha particles, then relatively short ion tracks (21) will be created in the air surrounding the objet (24). If the wavelength of the waves (22) is comparable to the length of the tracks (21), then the tracks (21) will act as antennae in a manner similar to chaff. The level of the reflected radio frequency waves (21) will give an indication of the amount of ionization in the air. |
