METHOD FOR PRODUCING OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform whereby a change in the outside diameter (the so-called unevenness) of the optical fiber preform in the longer direction is reduced.

SOLUTION: The method is an outside vapor deposition method wherein the burner shift distance per turn of the main shaft of an outside vapor deposition apparatus is 2.5-80% of that part of the longer direction of the preform which has a preform surface temperature falling within 20% of the maximum temperature when heated by a flame. In this way, the unevenness of the preform can be reduced to below 0.5%.
