<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system for providing high brightness, high efficiency and edges of definitely determined spectra when dichromatic surfaces are used in a digital projection system. <P>SOLUTION: A digital projection apparatus (10) for projecting multicolor images uniformizes poly chromatic light from a light source (12) and provides magnification to the illumination beam uniformized by using a base capacitor relay (80) for providing a reduced numerical aperture for conditioning at a dichroic separator (27). For the colors of the respective monochromatic components provided from the dichroic separator (27), a reducing relay (82), next, reduces the illumination beam in order to provide the space light modulator (30) with illumination of the source at an increased numerical aperture.
