PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare earth-activated barium fluoride halide phosphor precursor with a relatively high iodine content, its production method, and the phosphor. SOLUTION: The method for producing a rare earth-activated barium fluoride halide phosphor precursor having a base composition formula: Ba<SB>1-a</SB>M<SB>a</SB><SP>II</SP>FX<SB>1-b</SB>I<SB>b</SB>:<SB>y</SB>M<SP>I</SP>,<SB>z</SB>L<SB>n</SB>comprises the steps of preparing a reaction mother liquor of which the ratio of iodine ion content to halogen X ion content is 0.30 or higher and is at least 10 times the ratio of b/(1-b) and which is an aqueous solution containing a barium compound, a halogen X compound, an iodide, a rare earth compound, and if necessary an alkaline earth metal compound and an alkali metal compound; forming and precipitating a rare earth-activated barium fluoride halide phosphor precursor in a reaction solution by adding an aqueous fluoride solution to the reaction mother liquor; and separating the phosphor precursor from the reaction solution.
