<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the transmission efficiency and the fuel consumption by minimizing a lock-up prohibition area and enlarging a lock-up area, while preventing the engine stall in a very low speed area in starting and the like by preparing the lock-up prohibition area. <P>SOLUTION: The engagement of a lock-up clutch is prohibited under travelling conditions that an input rotating speed Ni is less than a predetermined value Ni(1), a car speed VSP is more than a predetermined car speed VSP(1), and a ratio Ip of an output rotating speed No to the input rotating speed Ni is within an area A of less than a predetermined value Ip(0). The last engaging or releasing state of the lock-up clutch is kept as a present state of the lock-up clutch under traveling conditions that the input rotating speed Ni is less than a predetermined value Ni(2) (>Ni(1)), and the car speed VSP is in an area C of more than a predetermined value VSP(2) (>VSP(1)).
