PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of securing a normal recording operation by stabilizing a perpendicular magnetic field distribution. SOLUTION: An auxiliary magnetic pole layer 14 is constituted so as to include a front part 14AF whose film thickness is made gradually thinner from a position retreated more than a front end surface E toward the same. The area of the front end surface E becomes smaller compared with that when the entire auxiliary magnetic pole layer 14 has a constant film thickness. When a flair point FP is set on a side near an air bearing surface, and the auxiliary magnetic pole layer 14 is brought close to the air bearing surface, the reduction in the area of the front end surface E is accompanied by the influence of magnetic fluxes concentrated near the tip of the auxiliary magnetic pole layer 14. Thus, an adverse effect caused by a magnetic flux flowing through the auxiliary magnetic pole layer 14 on a perpendicular magnetic field distribution is suppressed, and a perpendicular magnetic field distribution is stabilized on the trailing side of a main magnetic pole layer 12.
