PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a 2-(hydroxymethyl) cyclopropane carboxylic acid compound. SOLUTION: A compound expressed by formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen atom, a straight chain, branched chain or cyclic alkyl group or a substituted or a non-substituted aryl group: R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>, which can be either same with or different from each other, represent each hydrogen atom or methyl group: R<SP>4</SP>represents a 1-2C alkyl group substituted with at least a mono-substituted or non-substituted aryl group)is converted to a 2-(hydroxymethyl) cyclopropane carboxylic acid compound expressed by formula (2) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>indicate the same as above) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst.
