The device has at least one switching device (16,17) acting on a switch element (7) for valve actuation enabling valve operation in one of its switch states, transfer devices for transferring cam lift to the valve and a control unit (23). A data memory (21) records the time variation of gas exchange valve (1.1-6.1,1.2-6.2) movement. A data processing unit (22) combines valves into groups in respect of common activation or deactivation. The control unit assigns activation or deactivation times and drives switch elements.
