Furnace for melting of vitreous materials comprises a glass melting compartment (23) equipped with at least one charging aperture for feeding the vitreous material and a discharge aperture (42) for the molten glass emerging into a compartment destined to carry it to the shaping zone. Melting of the vitreous material in the melting compartment (23) is assured by at least one fuel oil and/or gas burner (21) in which the combustive is formed mainly of essentially pure oxygen and at least 50% of the oxygen necessary for the desired combustion is introduced separately by at least one oxygen lance (24,25). The process of melting vitreous material in the melting compartment of this furnace is also claimed.
