Biological treatment of phosphate-containing waste water, optionally after denitrification, in which the waste water is passed through a circuit comprising an anaerobic treatment stage followed by an aerobic treatment stage and resulting phosphate-depleted water is discharged from the circuit, comprises adding a readily biodegradable carbon source to the waste water in the anaerobic stage in admixture with a primary flocculant based on polyaluminum hydroxychloride.
