The mains converter or battery charger (1) has a plug part (2) with a pair of contact pins (3,4) for connection to the mains network via a standard 2-pin socket, a mains converter or battery charging circuit (5) and a lead cable (6) with a terminal (7) at its end for connection to an electrical load, e.g. a mobile telephone, personal computer or kitchen or garden electrical device. The lead cable is acted on by a cable retraction device, the lead cable storage reel (8) contained within a space (9) within the housing of the mains converter or battery charger.
