<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light emitting device, to be more precise, a semiconductor light emitting device into which a tunnel junction is incorporated. <P>SOLUTION: The light emitting device comprises a first active region, a second active region, and a tunnel junction. The tunnel junction includes a first electrically conductive type layer and a second electrically conductive type layer, both of which are thinner than a first conductive type layer and a second conductive type layer that surround the first active region.
