PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control system for the use and distribution of a compound digital work.

SOLUTION: In the system for controlling the access to and the use of the compound digital work between computer-based systems, the control system has a means for attaching a usage to the digital work; a means for creating a description structure having a description block which includes the usage; a plurality of repositories for managing the exchange of the compound digital work based upon the usage; and a rendering system for rendering the digital work. Each repository has a storage means 1204 for storing the digital work; a processor 1200 having a first server operating mode for processing an access request to the digital work and a second requester operating mode for starting requesting the access to the digital work; a timekeeping means 1205; and a connection means 1206.
