<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing methane gas by anaerobic fermentation, by which the time for the anaerobic fermentation can be shortened to efficiently produce the methane gas. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing the methane gas by the anaerobic fermentation is characterized by feeding organic wastes into a closed pressure-resistant vessel, steaming the organic wastes under high temperature and high pressure for a prescribed time, subjecting the steamed product to an anaerobic fermentation treatment in a digestion tank, and recovering the methane gas. A part of the recovered methane gas may be used as an energy source for the steam treatment. The fermentation stench may be removed by carbonizing the fermentation product, burning the carbonization gas produced in the carbonization process, and charging the fermentation stench into the burning process.
