PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially useful method of manufacturing a high-quality polyester resin having a low cyclic trimer content at a high polymerization rate. SOLUTION: This method of manufacturing a polyester resin comprises subjecting dicarboxylic acids comprising mainly terephthalic acid and diols comprising mainly ethylene glycol to esterification and polycondensation to produce a polyester prepolymer, heat treating the prepolymer in a gas mixture containing an inert gas and water and/or ethylene glycol, and subjecting the heat treated prepolymer to solid-phase polymerization. The concentration of the gaseous water and/or ethylene glycol in the gas mixture is 50-280 ppm (by volume), the heat treatment is performed at a temperature of 200°C to a melting temperature of the polyester prepolymer and in a solid state, and the solid-phase polymerization is performed under atmospheric pressure or a higher pressure.
