PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous ophthalmic composition thickened by a water-soluble macromolecular compound and having high viscosity stability in its long-term storage. SOLUTION: This ophthalmic composition is obtained by formulating (A) the thickened ophthalmic composition containing the water-soluble macromolecular compound with (B) at least one ingredient selected from dibutyl hydroxytoluene, butyl hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid or a salt thereof and a sulfite. The thickened ophthalmic composition containing the water-soluble macromolecular compound is filled in a resin-made container and then sealed in a packaging body. The concentration of innert gas in a space formed between the container and the packaging body is regulated to be≥50 vol%. Or, the container filled with the thickened ophthalmic composition containing the water-soluble macromolecular compound is sealed is the packaging body together with a deoxidation agent.
