<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase information density when information recording is performed by irradiating a thin film of polymer compound including azobenzene structure with light and forming an unevenness pattern on the surface. <P>SOLUTION: When an azobenzene polymer thin film is irradiated with a circular laser beam of linear polarization or a laser beam of an ellipse (or rectangular) having stripes of light and darkness, a surface relief pattern which is characterized in that k concave parts and (k+1) convex parts are arranged alternately on a straight line is obtained.
