<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having a long service life, high reliability, and sufficiently high luminous efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: This organic EL element is provided with: a transparent electrode 10; counter electrodes 15 disposed separately from the transparent electrode; a luminescent layer 13 disposed between the transparent electrode and the counter electrode; and a hole transportation layer 12 disposed between the transparent electrode and the luminescent layer.
