<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for easily manufacturing an optical glass with small residual strain and a process for manufacturing an optical fiber excellent in UV resistance property and ultraviolet transmission efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The glass preform 3 is manufactured by forming a second glass part 2 around a first glass part 1 through plasma outside vapor deposition, wherein the first glass part 1 comprises fluoridated glass formed through VAD (vapor-phase axial deposition), and the second glass part 2 comprises fluoridated glass with a higher fluoridation concentration than that in the first glass part 1. The optical glass with a small residual strain is manufactured by processing this glass preform 3 and subsequently removing the second glass part 2. The optical fiber excellent in UV resistance properties and ultraviolet transmission efficiency is manufactured by drawing the glass preform 3 into a fiber without removing the second glass part 2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
