The selective hydrogenation of acetylenes and diolefins in hydrocarbons boiling up to 200 DEG C. is effected in a hydrogen atmosphere in the trickle phase over a hydrogenation catalyst disposed in nests of vertical tubes of 30-70 mm. internal diameter provided with an external cooling system. The hydrocarbon may be a C3, C4 or C5 fraction or a gasoline obtained by pyrolysis at 600-1400 DEG C. of mineral oils. Hydrogenation is effected at 0-50 DEG C. and 2-50 atmospheres gauge using a static hydrogen atmosphere and a flow rate of 3-30 kg. per kg. of catalyst which may be platinum, palladium, nickel or cobalt supported on clay, pumice, alumina, magnesia, silica, silicates or carbon having a surface of less than 50 m.2/g. and a water absorption capacity of at least 10%. The tubes are 2-12 m. in length arranged in an outer tube through which flows a coolant such as liquid ammonia, or C3 or C4 hydrocarbon. The process of specification 866,395 is disclaimed.
