The invention provides oil-in-water emulsions comprising an antidepressant; an NMDA-receptor antagonists; a lipophilic component; water; and a surfactant. The compositions induce a local-anesthetic effect when topically administered to intact skin thereby treating or preventing pain, for example, neuropathic pain.
