The system may be used with a six cylinder in-line internal combustion engine. The camshaft has an indicator wheel (NW) with a pattern of large diameter (Z,Z2,Z3) and small diameter (L,L1,L4) regions, giving a different identification pattern for each of the six cylinders (Zyl.1-Zyl.6). The system is used when starting the engine. The ignition point (ZOT) for cylinder No.1 is defined as occurring at an angle (alpha) after the leading edge (1) of the first large diameter segment.
