Production of pentafluoro sulfuranides involves reduction of sulfur hexafluoride with a divalent cation-forming organic reducing agent in a suitable solvent. A method (M1) for the production of pentafluoro sulfuranides of formula Q2+F-SF5- (I) involves the reduction of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) with a divalent cation-forming organic reducing agent (Q) in a suitable solvent. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method (M2) for the production of SF4 by reducing SF6 with Q as above and then liberating SF4 from (I) by heating or by adding an acid compound; (2) a method (M3) for the fluorination of organic compounds of formula R1R2R3COH, R1R2CO, RCOX and RCOOH to give R1R2R3CF, R1R2CF2, RCF2X and RCF3 respectively, by reaction in solvent with (I) or with SF4 (generated as above in presence of the substrate); (3) a method (M4) for the replacement of a leaving group X by an -SF5 group in an aliphatic compound of formula R1R2R3CX to give R1R2R3CSF5, by reaction with (I), formed by in-situ reduction of SF6 as above in presence of the starting compound; and (4) a method (M5) for the replacement of aromatic halogen or perfluoroalkyl-sulfonate groups by -SF5 groups by reaction with (I) formed as in M4. X = -OR4 or -NR5R6 (in M3), and Cl, Br, I, alkyl, aryl or perfluoroalkyl sulfonate (in M4); R, R1-R6 = any organic residues.
