A fuel tank is assembled from components (2, 3) that are made to an accurate size so that the welding gaps are small, e.g. less than 1 mm, and welding is carried out by a laser. The laser is preferably carried in a six-axis robot and no filler material is used. The welding sequence is started at one end seam (IV), followed by the longitudinal seams (6) and ending at the other end seam.
