PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner capable of acting a tension on a chain without requiring the need of an external hydraulic pressure supply source. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner comprises a piston assembly formed of a hollow piston and an insert 42 having a piston hole surrounding the piston, a suction check valve 52 disposed under the liquid level 34 of fluid when one end of the piston assembly is dipped in the fluid to control the inflow of the fluid into the piston 31, and a fluid discharge control device 50 disposed at the reverse side end of the suction check valve 52 in the piston assembly, preventing the inflow of air in the extension of the piston, and allowing the outflow of the controlled fluid in the retraction of the piston and a check mechanism connected to the piston 31 so that the piston 31 is not retracted beyond a backlash amount 55 or more. The tensioner functions as an automatic filling pump by utilizing an operation allowed with the range of the backlash amount 55. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
