997,253. Building tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 6, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 21808/62. Addition to 932,792. Heading B7C. In apparatus in which a tyre carcass is shaped on an inflatable shaping unit 40 comprising two bead supporting members 41 and means for moving these symmetrically relative to the carcass, an annular tread 22 and/or breaker 21 is moved axially into position around the carcass C (Fig. 3) by a carrying means 23, which means comprises a rigid cylinder 23a enclosing a plurality of spring fingers 24 which are moved inwards to grip the tread and/or breaker by inflating a member 25 (Figs. 3, 5). Initially the tread and/or breaker is supported on the periphery of a collapsible drum (Fig. 1, not shown), having peripheral segments which are withdrawn leaving the tread supported by a rigid internal band and gripped externally by the fingers 24. The carrying means 23 is then withdrawn, sliding on a shaft 33, and a member 32a is rotated about a base 32b to align the carrying means with the shaping unit 40 (Fig. 3). The band is removed and the carrying means advanced to the limit of a stop ring 39, so that the tread and/or breaker encloses the carcass. The peripheral segments of the drum may be shaped to form a tread of curved axial cross-section and the fingers 24 formed concave (Fig. 6, not shown). Fig. 7 shows a carrying means 54, in which two annular springs 57 are secured to the ends of a rigid cylinder 55 with alternate fingers intermeshing. |
