A composition for use in the cold permanent waving of hair comprises 10 parts by weight of a water-soluble keratin reducing mercapto compound, 1-10 parts by weight of an alpha-omega bifunctional compound of the general formula X-Z-Y in which X and Y are each either -CONH2 or -CN and Z is -CH(CH3)CH2-, -CH2CH(CH3)CH2-, -CH(CH3)CH2CH2-or -(CH2)n-, n being an integer of 1-4 except when both X and Y are -CN in which case n is 2, and an alkaline material which, when the composition is used in an aqueous medium, imparts to the medium a pH of 7-10, the concentration of mercapto compound used being sufficient to wave hair and being equivalent to at least 0.6% thioglycollic acid. The mercapto compound may be a low molecular weight water-soluble mercaptan containing another functional group, e.g. a carboxyl, hydroxyl or amide group, in addition to the mercapto group and is preferably a mercapto alkanoic acid containing 2-6 carbon atoms or a salt thereof. The alkaline material may comprise a weak base having a dissociation constant of less than 10-3, e.g. ammonia, monoethanol amine, diethanolamine, tris (hydroxymethyl) amino methane, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propane diol, triethanolamine and glycerylamine, to which soluble carbonates and bicarbonates may be added to stabilize the pH, or a mixture comprising a major proportion of a weak base and a minor proportion of a strong base, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide. The composition which may also contain a perfume and a wetting agent, e.g. t-octyl phenol condensed with 9-10 moles of ethylene oxide, may be packaged in dry form, used to impregnate a pliable sheet or mixed with water and a propellant gas in liquified or dissolved form so that it can be dispensed from a pressurized container. After treatment with the composition the hair may be rinsed and treated with a solution containing sodium perborate and citric acid or subjected to aerial oxidation. Specification 860,978 and U.S.A.
