A method of enhancing the operation of an emissions after treatment system in a fuel combustion system involves supplying a fuel comprising an additive (preferably manganese compound) to the system, combusting the fuel to produce at least one byproduct comprising the manganese compound which is complex with the combustion byproduct. Independent claims are also included for methods of enhancing the operation of emission after treatment system in a diesel fuel combustion systems.
