Reduction of the amount of sulfur trioxide in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine involves contacting the exhaust gas containing sulfur oxide with sulfate absorbent at a temperature lower than a releasing temperature and raising the temperature of absorbent after it has absorbed sulfur oxide to a predetermined temperature higher than the releasing temperature to release the absorbed sulfur oxide from the absorbent.
