The apparatus has a conveying arrangement (7) with individually controllable grippers (9) moved in a conveying direction. A product receiving region of the grippers has a positive stop (17) which is active during each product (6) transfers. The spacing between a stop and conveying nip (5) is selected in a way that trailing edges (10) of products are still located in the nip when leading edges strike against the stop. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating an apparatus.
