Method for determining the provenance of a data carrying disc

Uncorrected data is read from the disc (6) and information about physical manufacturing errors (E) is extracted from it. The error information is compared against characteristic information from known sources to determine whether the data carrier was produced from a known genuine source. Independent claims are included for; (1) an apparatus for enabling the provenance of a data carrying disc to be determined, and (2) a method of incorporating identifying error information into a data carrier.
