A method for detecting skin stimulation effect by a test substance comprises contacting a test substance with epithelial cells, and detecting the increase or decrease of calcium ion concentration in the cells. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for screening inhibitors for skin stimulation and/or skin abnormality by using the detection method with the inhibitor, and detecting increase in calcium ion concentration in the epithelial cells due to a skin-stimulating substance as indicator; and (2) a method for evaluating skin state by correlating with increase or decrease of calcium ion concentration in the epithelial cells.
