The gate (10) for the station entrance (4) does not allow sufficient space for the animal to pass when the gate is in the normal ajar position and there is only enough space for the animal to pass when the animal pushes the gate into a fully open position. The entrance gate is operated via an entrance sensor which detects movement of the gate from the normal ajar position into the fully open position and responds by closing the gate. A vessel (9) containing animal feed is located in a feeding region (30) which the animal can access via an entrance and leave via an exit (5). A gate (11) is provided for the exit.
