The invention relates to a device comprised of a refractory ceramic material and provided for preventing a vortex effect in the discharge area of a metallurgical melting vessel. The device has a base part to which a cylindrical extension having at least one opening on the wall connects. The opening is arranged in such a manner that, after the device has been placed in the discharge area of the melting vessel, it is located at a distance from the bottom of the melting vessel and creates a connection to the discharge area of the melting vessel.
