The invention relates to an illumination system comprising a gas discharge lamp (4), especially a high-pressure gas discharge lamp, which is arranged in a device that is closed in a gas-tight manner. According to the invention, the device comprises a relief valve (12) which is arranged and selected in such a way that air which thermally expands inside the device during the operation of the gas discharge lamp escapes from the device by means of the relief valve (12). One such illumination system prevents toxic gases from escaping out of the illumination system into the environment if the gas discharge lamp (4) explodes. The invention also relates to a method for preventing the escape of unwanted gases or splinters of glass from an illumination system comprising a gas discharge lamp during the destruction of said gas discharge lamp.
