PURPOSE: A device and method for assisting the running of a vehicle at night is provided to warn a driver of the existence and nonexistence of a walker by detecting the walker with an infrared camera. CONSTITUTION: An infrared camera(100) emits infrared rays into a walker, converts the infrared rays reflected from the walker into electric signals, and outputs image signals. An image processing unit(200) extracts border lines from the image signals, and outputs image converting data. A speed sensor detects the speed of a vehicle. An alarm unit(500) warns a driver of the existence and nonexistence of the walker. A microcomputer(400) receives the image converting data, determines the existence and nonexistence of the walker, and operates the alarm unit.
