Composition and process for producing a Water-Repellent Finish

[Also in Division D1] An aqueous composition for treating fibrous materials comprises (a) a methylolaminotriazine esterified with at least one C14+ fatty acid or etherified with at least one C14+ alcohol, (b) a hydrophobic wax-like substance, (c) a polyoxyalkylated amine having at least 16 C atoms in an N-bound aliphatic hydrocarbon group and at least 10 oxyalkylene residues in the molecule, (d) a protective colloid, and (e) a curing catalyst, the ratio of (a): (b) being 2:3-9:1 by weight. The component (a) may be derived from guanamine, acetoguanamine, benzoguanamine, or melamine; the wax (b) may be beeswax, paraffin wax or a polyethylene wax; the component (c) may be obtained from ethylene oxide and an N - monoalkyl - ethylene- or -propylenediamine or N-alkylamine, and the tertiary N atom may be quaternated, e.g. with an alkyl chloride or bromide, chloro- or bromo-acetic acid amide, ethylene chlorhydrin, benzyl chloride or epichlorhydrin; the colloid (d) may be hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyacrylamide, polyvinylpyrrolidone, a carboxyvinyl polymer or polyvinyl alcohol; the catalyst (e) may be NH 4 Cl, NH 4 CNS, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 , ZnCl 2 , Zn(BF 4 ) 2 , MgCl 2 , HCl, H 3 PO 4 , HÀCOOH, AlCl 3 or Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . The emulsion may be prepared as a concentrate; before use it is diluted with water to 2-10 wt. per cent of (a)+(b), 0À15-4 wt. per cent of (c) and 0À05-5 wt. per cent of (d), and the catalyst (e) is added. In Examples the components used are (a) hexamethylol methyl ether condensed with 1 mol. of stearic or myristic or arachic alcohol, or hexamethylol butyl ether condensed with arachic alcohol, (b) paraffin waxes of 50-52‹ or 60-62‹ C. m.p., isocerin, beeswax or polyethylene wax, (c) ethylene oxide adducts: 30 mols with a stearylamine/arachidylamine/behenylamine mixture (the product optionally quaternized with ethylene chlorhydrin, epichorhydrin or benzyl chloride); or 30 or 70 mols with a palmitylamine/stearylamine / arachidylamine / behenylamine mixture; or 30 mols with a hexadecylamine/stearylamine/ octadecylamine mixture or a hexadecylamine/ octadecylamine / octadecenylamine mixture, (d) polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone or a carboxyvinyl polymer, (e) Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and NH 4 Cl, ZnCl 2 , MgCl 2 and Zn(BF 4 ) 2 once each.
