The control for the traction motors of a hybrid motor vehicle has a sensor (14) to determine the optimal operating mode of the vehicle depending on the vehicle operating parameters and the battery charge state to operate the vehicle in electric only or hybrid mode. The control has an operating module (12) which controls the battery charge and discharge cycles depending on the charge state and electric motor energy consumption.
