Fire-resistant cellulosic material comprises a guanidine polymer partially substituted with dehydroxyphosphoryl groups covalently bonded to its cellulose structure. Fire-resistant cellulosic material comprises a guanidine polymer comprising repeat units with the following formula partially substituted with dehydroxyphosphoryl groups covalently bonded to its cellulose structure: (Structure (lines 5-8), page 12) (m is not defined in claims but is disclosed as preferably being 1 or 2). Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of a fire-resistant cellulosic material by preparing a soluble guanidine polymer as above, optionally mixing the polymer with urea, contacting the polymer with a cellulosic material and heating the product to 140-180degreesC; (2) production of cellulosic particle board by heating cellulosic particles with a binder comprising urea and a guanidine polymer as above.
