PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing inexpensively anα-olefin copolymer useful for a coating material, a surface modifier, a primer, a coating agent, etc. by copolymerizing anα-olefin with an alkenyl alcohol. SOLUTION: This method comprises polymerizing theα-olefin with an alkenyl alcohol represented by formula (1): H<SB>2</SB>C=CH-R-OH (1) (wherein R is a hydrocarbon group represented by C<SB>n</SB>H<SB>2n</SB>and n is an integer of 2-12) under existence of a specific homogeneous metal complex catalyst (wherein a metallocene catalyst is excluded). According to this method, theα-olefin copolymer having 500-500,000 of a number average molecular weight (Mn) is produced, in which an average of 0.5-200 units based on the alkenyl alcohol are combined per molecular chain of a polymer.
