PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing hydrogen by decomposing water through a thermal cycle of water performed within a closed system. SOLUTION: Water 3 is sealed inside a pressure-tight vessel 2 and repetitively subjected to the thermal cycle to obtain hydrogen. Here, a high-temperature, pressurized state wherein the temperature of water 3 is≥100°C and the internal pressure inside the pressure-tight vessel 2 is≥1 atm and a low-temperature, depressurized state wherein the temperature of water 3 is <100°C and the internal pressure inside the pressure-tight vessel 2 is <1 atm alternate in the thermal cycle.
