PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a metallic material in solid-liquid coexisting state with which finer and more uniform spheroidized grains are obtained and, the advantages, such as the improvement of energy efficiency, saving of producing cost, the improvement of mechanical properties, the simplification of casting process, and shortening of producing time, can be realized. SOLUTION: Electromagnetic field is impressed to a vessel and molten metal is poured into the vessel. The molten metal is cooled and the metallic material in the solid-liquid coexisting state, is formed. In a process for cooling the molten metal, the temperature is wholly and uniformly lowered from the wall surface to the center part of the vessel without developing the latent heat with the formation of the solidified layer at the initial stage. The molten metal can rapidly be cooled to not higher than the liquidus temperature within such short period of time as about 1-10 sec after pouring the molten metal, and many crystal nucleus can uniformly be generated over the whole range. Thus, the metallic material having fine and uniform micro-structure can be produced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
