The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) (10) has a pressure sensor (66) connected to the common rail (2) and can provide individual electrical control signals for each injector (5) to give small pilot injections. Each injector has a separate inlet from the common rail. The ECU has a control connection to a SCV (Suction Control Valve) (4) on the high-pressure fuel pump (3). The pump has a suction line (19) drawing fuel from a tank (9) and a pressure line feeding into the common rail. The ECU has inputs (61-65) from the engine rev counter, the accelerator pedal, the cooling water temperature, the temperature of the fuel and the temperature of the environment.
