PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline detergent composition for steel plates exhibiting excellent detergency even at a low temperature, capable of keeping detergency even when stain is mixed therein and excellent in durability. SOLUTION: The alkaline detergent composition for steel plates comprises an alkaline agent, a compound represented by the general formula (1): R-O-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>k</SB>H (wherein R is a 5-10C straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group or alkenyl group; k represents average addition mole number of an oxyethylene group and k is 1-20) and a polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether represented by general formula (2) (wherein R is a 12-18C straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group or alkenyl group; l, m and n each represents an average addition mole number of an oxyethylene group, an oxypropylene group and an oxyethylene group, respectively, and l and m are each 0-10 and n is 1-30 and l+n≤30; addition form of the oxyethylene group and oxypropylene group in the parentheses [ ] may be a block or a random).
