PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character reading system capable of making sure that correct character reading is under way by determining whether or not a threshold used in pattern matching is appropriate each time characters are read. SOLUTION: The character reading system is provided with an image pickup means which picks up images of individual patterns from workpieces and outputs image pickup signals; a pattern collating means for obtaining binary image data from the image pickup signals and collating the data with a stored reference pattern; and a statistical means which performs a statistical process on the results of collation by the pattern collating means.
